The Portuguese Orthodontic Society
The Portuguese Orthodontic Society is a medical association dedicated to the study and research of orthodontics.
The History of the SPO
At the beginning of the 1990s, a group of dentists and stomatologists, eager to acquire new knowledge in the field of orthodontic science, decided to organize a study group following a course taught by Professor Dr. Hugo Trevisi. So in September 1992, at a meeting held at the Hotel Zurich in Lisbon, the first statutes of the Installing Committee of the Portuguese Straight-Wire Pro-Foundation Group were presented. This group included Dr. Miguel Nóbrega, Dr. Martinho Pinheiro, Dr. Sérgio Gonçalves, Dr. Carlos Mota, Dr. Joaquim Morgado, Dr. Faria, Dr. José Carlos Fernandes, Dr. Àlvaro Moreira, Dr. Carlos Pinto, Dr. Falcão, Dr. Luis Pinto, Dr. Alfeu, Dr. Silvestre Agostinho, Dr. Jorge Catarino, Dr. Nuno Lopes, among others.
In July 1993, at a meeting organized at the Hotel D. Inês in Coimbra, it was decided to found the Portuguese Society of Straight-Wire Orthodontics. The articles of association were drawn up by Dr. Ilidio Santos and the public deed was signed on March 1, 1995.
The Installation Committee was set up, made up of colleagues Ilidio Santos, Francisco Freitas, Rui Domingues, Joaquim Morgado and José Carlos Pereira.
After its foundation, new colleagues joined the society and the organization of the first training events and the first congress of the Portuguese Orthodontic Society began.
Once again, Coimbra had the privilege of hosting this congress, which took place on December 16 and 17, 1995, at the Hotel D. Luis. To this end, Dr. Manuel Marques Ferreira and Dr. Carlos Mota organized the event, asking colleagues to present their clinical cases. Dr. Hugo Trevisi was also invited to this event, and in addition to his presentation, he attended the lectures given by his colleagues from the Portuguese Orthodontic Society, with the pride of a master.

From then on, the Society never stopped, organizing scientific sessions and congresses, promoting scientific work and publications, always trying to give prestige and dignity to orthodontics, with the maxim that knowledge belongs to everyone and for everyone.
With the certainty that they would be important milestones in the consolidation and affirmation of an area of dentistry that needs the support and synergy of institutions whose mission is to defend the ethics, deontology and qualifications of their members, while respecting patients’ right to qualified dentistry, various events have been held over the years in the most varied places in the country in an attempt to bring the most modern and innovative developments in Portugal and abroad to all colleagues.
With this in mind, the SPO has ensured that its annual congress has a panel of speakers and trainers of the highest quality and prestige at national and international level, with vast clinical and academic experience and with extensive contributions in studies and publications in the most relevant scientific journals in orthodontics.
The years go by and the work remains. Men go and institutions remain.
We want the Portuguese Orthodontic Society to continue to grow and to contribute to the technical/scientific training of Dentists/Stomatologists in a healthy environment and for our colleagues to embrace this journey in order to do more and better for Orthodontics, Dentistry and the oral health of the Portuguese.
