Portuguese Orthodontic Society: A 32-year journey
Since its inception, the Portuguese Orthodontic Society has sought to be a space open to all those dedicated to orthodontics, valuing scientific evidence and knowledge.
Over the years, various events have been held in different parts of the country, trying to bring the most modern and innovative developments in Portugal and abroad to all colleagues. The years go by and the work remains. Men go and institutions stay.
We want the Portuguese Society of Orthodontics to continue to grow and contribute to the training of dentists/stomatologists in a healthy environment, and for our colleagues to embrace this journey in order to do more and better for orthodontics, dentistry and the oral health of the Portuguese.
The next event will be the XXX SPO Congress, to be held on October 24, 25 and 26. Under the motto “Journey through orthodontics”, the XXX SPO Congress, chaired by Dr. Carlos Coelho, is positioned as a Congress that promotes scientific updating and clinical training.
For this very reason, we chose the city of Porto, and in particular the Super Bock Arena – Pavilhão Rosa Mota, because it represents the most innovative and distinctive part of Portugal.
Because we are living in a new reality, we have adapted the theme of the congress to “Journey through orthodontics” in order to make colleagues aware of the need to invest in their academic training without forgetting the foundations of orthodontics and the fundamental principles of biomechanics. The aim is to make colleagues aware of the critical importance of the medical diagnosis that should guide the doctor in his therapeutic decision-making, creating moments of debate on contemporary challenges and the transition of the different techniques already underway, contributing to the progress of orthodontics in Portugal.
This is an event of great importance and tradition organized by the SPO, which this year marks its thirtieth edition. The panel of speakers at the most eagerly awaited scientific meeting of the specialty includes major national and international orthodontic references in their areas of research, specialization and teaching: Dr. Enzo Pasciuti, Dr. Ramon Monpell, Dr. Martin Pedernera, Dr. Pedro Costa Monteiro, Dr. Helena Agostinho, Dr. Mauro de Oliveira, Dr. Mauro de Oliveira and Dr. Mauro de Oliveira. Helena Agostinho, Dr. Ma Cristina Faria Teixeira, Dr. Teresa Pinho, Dr. Helena Cerviño and many other prestigious national and international specialists.

On this journey on which we want everyone to embark, I must remember the Power of Choice, the theme of last year’s Congress. It was a Congress of turning points and affirmation. I had the honor of chairing it and carrying over all the experience involved to this year. We want this year’s to be even more successful. I’m sure we will.
